Italy removes Maldives from travel red list

The Government of Italy has removed the Maldives from its travel red list.

The Maldives was placed on Italy's green list for travel on September 22. As such, travellers returning from the Maldives are no longer required to undergo quarantine in Italy. The latest update also shows Italy has placed other countries on the green list including Bangladesh, Egypt, Kenya, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.

Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Enrico Giovannini has confirmed the Maldives has been removed from the red list for travel. He said the decision will allow Italians to travel without having to undergo quarantine.

Italy's travel red list currently has 54 countries and the removal of the Maldives from the list is expected to increase the number of tourist visits to the country. A total of 136,000 Italian tourists visited the Maldives in 2019 and 45,000 tourists visited in 2020, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Tourism. Around 7,205 Italian nationals have visited the Maldives so far this year.
