Ex-President Maumoon and Ex-MP Faris secure top two leadership positions of MRM

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and former Parliamentarian Ahmed Faris Maumoon have secured the top two leadership positions of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) ahead of the party’s upcoming national convention.

Former President Maumoon had submitted his candidacy for the position of MRM Leader, while Faris had submitted his candidacy for the position of MRM President ahead of the party’s national convention to be held on October 2. Both have secured their positions without a vote, as no other candidates are contesting for the two positions.

In addition to the top two positions of the party, another 12 positions have been secured without a vote. This includes the position of female vice president, won by Aminath Nadhira.

Only four positions remain to be decided at the MRM national convention. This includes the position of male vice president, male members of the executive committee as well as male and female members of the youth council.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) permitted MRM to hold the party convention in 2019. However, the party was previously unable to hold the convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
