CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim has stated developing shore protection in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll is a high priority. He made the statement during his tour of the shore protection site on the island.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Azim said MTCC takes special priority in completing the shore protection project in Thulhaadhoo due to the immediacy of the situation. He said the problem of erosion has severely worsened on the island and threatens to damage residential buildings.
Thulhaadhoo has a population of over 2,000 and has a longstanding issue of erosion with 15 feet of land in the northern side of the island having been eroded in the last six months. Vice President of Thulhaadhoo Island Council Mohamed Manik said he has received complaints about erosion damaging households.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to design and build the shore protection structure in Thulhaadhoo on March 29. The state-owned company stated it began the fieldwork at the project site on September 15.
The scope of the project involves 11,700 cubic metres of backfilling and bed preparation works and the construction of a 280-metre geobag revetment. MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 150 days at a cost of USD 655,000.
