Vice President Faisal Naseem states the Maldives can achieve triumph and success by joining forces and cooperating with foreign partners. He made the statement in his appearance in the Foreign Policy segment of Public Service Media (PSM).
Speaking on the segment, the vice president highlighted the dependence of the Maldives on the outside world for basic requirements. In this regard, he said that since the Maldives is extremely reliant on foreign countries, whether for tourism or for foreign currency, it remains critical to maintaining uninterrupted relations with the international community.
Vice President Naseem affirmed the international community has placed immense trust upon the Maldives in electing Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid as the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Reflecting on the state of affairs when the incumbent administration took office, the vice president said the previous regime had adopted isolationist foreign policy. He added that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was swift to re-establish ties with the international community and that his administration strives to reshape the country's foreign policy towards the ideals of its people.
Furthermore, Vice President Naseem noted the foreign policy of the Maldives played a crucial role in the country's success in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The vice president added the Maldives had been one of the first countries to receive a considerable amount of vaccines to initiate the national inoculation campaign as a result of its strong foreign policy. He further emphasised that assistance from foreign partners is also serving the Maldives in terms of human resource development and capacity building.
