The national flag carrier airline of Spain, Iberia, has scheduled to resume flights to the Maldives for the winter season.
Iberia previously operated flights to the Maldives from July to August, making three weekly flights to Velana International Airport (VIA). The airline stated that flights to the Maldives were in demand during the summer. Iberia's new flight operations have been scheduled for December to February next year and will be making flights from Madrid to VIA. The flights are expected to increase the number of tourist visits from Europe.
Other international airlines have also begun flight operations to the Maldives due to the country's popularity as a travel destination. Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show 33 airlines are currently operating flights to the Maldives, with 23 scheduled flights and 10 charter flights.
The Maldives has seen an increase in flights and tourist arrivals due to the decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
