Maldives to continue as chair of UNWTO commission for South Asia

The Maldives has been elected as the Chair of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Commission for the South Asian region.

Along with the Maldivian Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, 25 members from seven countries participated in the meeting of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia. During the meeting, member countries were elected to the statutory and subsidy bodies of the organisation. As such, the Maldives was elected as the chair for a second term, with Bangladesh and Iran appointed as vice-chairs.

Meanwhile, India was appointed as the Vice President of the General Assembly and Bhutan was appointed to the Credential Committee. Furthermore, Iran and India were elected to the executive council chairs for South Asia.

UNWTO Commission for South Asia is one of six regional bodies established in 1975 as subsidiary organs of the General Assembly. The UNWTO Commission for South Asia consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
