President to attend 76th session of UNGA in New York

The President's Office has announced President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will travel to New York on September 18 to attend the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

President Solih will be joined on his trip by First Lady Fazna Ahmed and a high-level Maldivian delegation. In New York, he will participate in several bilateral and multilateral sessions during his time in New York.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid will be serving as the President of the 76th Session of the UNGA, making it the first time a Maldivian will sitting as the president of the UNGA.

The President's Office noted Minister Shahid was elected to the seat with an overwhelming majority of votes, demonstrating that world leaders have accepted the Maldives as a significant player in the international arena.

The Maldives has vocally advocated for several global causes, most importantly as a climate champion fighting for the priorities of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The president will conclude his trip and return to the Maldives on September 28.
