President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reveals the government aims to establish a digital economy. He made the statement at the inauguration ceremony of the gov.mv message service.
In his speech, President Solih said the gov.mv message service is a digital platform for citizens to submit government documents online from anywhere at any time with ease. He said the world is being transformed by digital technologies in business, education, and health services.
Highlighting the advantages of embracing technology, the president said the strategic action plan of the government includes the introduction of digital identity cards within the next two years in order to make it easier for citizens to receive government services. He said the government has proposed a bill in parliament to eliminate the current obstacles that prevent the implementation of digital services such as digital identity cards.
The president also said bills on data protection, privacy, and cyber-crimes are being formulated to protect citizens online. He noted the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of digital technology, which allowed students to continue their classes online and businesses to use digital financial services.
