Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla has said the institution is working on implementing the mandate without bias. He made the statement while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the human rights awareness programme being held in Kulhudhuffushi City.
The purpose of the programme is to sustainably increase human rights awareness in the atolls and allow HRCM to work more closely with citizens. In his speech, Commissioner Adham said the HRCM is conducting its work in accordance with the constitution and established laws as well as international best practices.
Commissioner Adham said the most important goal in the strategic plan for 2021 to 2025 of the HRCM is to increase public awareness of human rights and the commission's work. As such, the commissioner said the human rights awareness programme being held in Kulhudhuffushi is crucial in expanding awareness throughout the atolls.
As part of the work, he said HRCM will be hosting workshops for the councillors from Haa Alifu Atoll, as well as training programmes for human rights defenders, visiting the elderly and disabled in the city, and hosting a community night and fair. The HRCM will also be hosting information sessions for state employees to increase awareness of whistleblower laws, said Commissioner Adham.
HRCM also held meetings with the Kulhudfhuffushi City Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) to discuss ways to increase partnership for the protection of human rights.
Furthermore, a team from the HRCM visited the Kulhudhuffushi City Police Station and met with senior officers.
