Speaker praises government’s response to COVID-19

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has praised the response by the government to the COVID-19 outbreak in the Maldives.

Speaking at his first press conference since the May 6 bomb attack, Speaker Nasheed said he was very pleased with the way the government has handled the pandemic situation, noting the efficient response to the pandemic has benefitted the country. However, the speaker said economic consequences of the pandemic are inevitable, adding the state debt is expected to rise compared to projections.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured during a targeted bomb attack near his residence in Male’ on May 6. After undergoing multiple life-saving procedures at ADK Hospital in Male’, the speaker left to Germany and then to UK for further treatment.
