Agro National Corporation Limited (AgroNat) has revealed efforts are underway to establish cold storage systems in nine islands. The project is part of the efforts to provide fresh agricultural produce to customers, stated AgroNat.
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director of AgroNat Haroon Rasheed said the cold storage systems are a better way for farmers to preserve and store their agricultural produce. The cold storage systems will be established with assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said Haroon adding all the necessary plots of land have been leased by AgroNat, estimating that all cold storage systems will be built by April next year.
AgroNat will be establishing cold storage systems in Manadhoo, Kinolhas, Magoodhoo, Gan, Isdhoo, Kalaidhoo, Nilandhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Hulhumeedhoo. AgroNat was established by the government to market agricultural produce from local farms and provide a better income for farmers by providing technical and financial assistance to local farmers and helping them to market their produce.
So far, farmers from 45 islands have begun the fieldwork under the first phase of the contract farming project.
