MPS to be divided into five regions

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has revealed the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is being divided into five regions. He made the statement in his speech at the opening ceremony of a police station in Maafaru, Noonu Atoll.

In his speech, Minister Imran revealed the MPS will be divided into five regions, as an alternative to the current policy of splitting the police services into seven divisions. The minister said the change will be implemented by September and that dividing MPS into regions will allow police officers to have more autonomy in solving regional issues instead of having to rely on the central authority. He said regional commanders will be appointed and given additional authority and that the changes will improve police services, and speed up decision-making.

Furthermore, Minister Imran said the government is focused on fulfilling President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledge to establish a police presence in all inhabited islands in the Maldives over the next three years. The minister said it has become crucial to establish a police presence in all inhabited islands in order to safeguard citizens and provide peace and security.

He also highlighted the importance of cooperation from the community in establishing peace and said that an honest and cooperative community will make way for a stable society.
