JSC to probe attempts to influence judges

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has begun an investigation into the alleged attempt to influence the judges that presided over former President Abdulla Yameen's case.

In a press release, JSC said it has begun an investigation into allegations that Criminal Court judges were told to give a particular ruling in a case. Recent media reports claimed that an audio leak shows three Criminal Court judges that presided over former president Yameen's case stating they had been told to give a particular ruling in the case.

In the press release, JSC stated judges are required to be impartial and conduct their work in accordance with the constitution and laws without being swayed by intimidation. Accusations of private parties or state officials attempting to influence the work of judges will undermine public trust in the courts, said JSC.

Therefore, JSC stated it will prioritise and investigate attempts to influence judges, in order to safeguard the independence and integrity of the courts. As such, JSC detailed that it has formed a committee and begun an investigation into the alleged influencing of Criminal Court judges.

The commission added that it will also be taking statements from the relevant judges.
