The world must stand with the people of Afghanistan: Minister Shahid

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has stated the world must unite against terrorism and stand with the people of Afghanistan.

Minister Shahid, who is also the president-elect of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), made the statement following the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport. In a tweet, Minister Shahid said he strongly condemns the deadly terrorist attack at the Kabul airport that killed and wounded many innocent civilians and that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones.

On August 26, two suicide bombers struck outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, killing Afghan civilians and 13 American service members. The bombs were set off near a crowd of families at the airport gates who were hoping to get space on one of the departing military transports.

Since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, thousands of Afghan civilians and foreign citizens have been gathering at the airport gates in the hopes of being airlifted out of the country. Most of the bombing victims were Afghan civilians, including families with small children, waiting at the airport.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
