Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture has revealed the development of a multi-species hatchery in Maanagala, Gaafu Alifu Atoll is reaching completion.
Speaking at a programme aired on PSM News, Minister of State for Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Hassan Rasheed said 90% of the infrastructure required for the multi-species hatchery in Maanagala has been completed. As such, the state minister said accommodation facilities, as well as electrical and water supply networks have been established at the site, and are ready for use. He said preparations are underway to announce for a party to operate the mariculture hatchery.
In addition, the fisheries ministry is also currently developing a mariculture training centre in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll. Speaking on the progress of the project, State Minister Hassan Rasheed said the facility has been prepared as a research and demonstrative facility. He added the facility is also being used to grow groupers.
The government has been undertaking several efforts to strengthen mariculture and aquaculture in the Maldives. As such, the fisheries ministry is also currently undertaking a successful project to grow groupers in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
