The Leader of the Jumhoree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim has stated the government has not been negligent in providing protection and ensuring the safety of citizens. He made the statement during the parliamentary debate on the bill on Acts of Hatred submitted by Parliamentarian Hisaan Hussain on behalf of the government.
During the debate, Parliamentarian Qasim thanked the government for submitting the bill and proposed an amendment to ban speech that not only insults Islam, but also ban speech that insults God, the prophet, and the Quran. Qasim said members of the opposition parties will always attempt to highlight incompetence, but that the current government has shown that it provides protection to those who need it and ensure the safety of citizens.
The JP leader made the statement in regards to the government providing protection to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed after he was injured in the May 6 terrorist attack. He also denounced the attackers and denied claims that the government has been negligent in providing protection for Nasheed.
Furthermore, Qasim commended the government for working to prevent murder and other inhumane acts from being committed in the country.
