MMA predicts 1.1 million tourist arrivals to be recorded this year

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has predicted that the Maldives will record 1.1 million tourist arrivals by the end of this year.

Speaking at a press conference, Governor of MMA Ali Hashim said the major industries of the Maldivian economy are on a good recovery path following the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, the governor noted the tourism industry is taking significant strides in recovering from the pandemic, with last July returning the best numbers since borders were reopened last year. He predicted that the country will be able to record 1.1 million tourist arrivals by the end of the year.

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that 705,024 tourists arrived in the Maldives between January 1 and August 19 this year. This is an 81.2% increase compared to the 389,187 tourists that visited the Maldives in the same period in 2020.

The tourism ministry is also recording a daily average of 4,877 tourist arrivals in August, which is the highest recorded daily average so far this year. The highest number of tourist arrivals were recorded on August 7, which was 6,083 tourist arrivals.
