Maldives records over 700,000 tourist arrivals so far this year

The Maldives has recorded over 700,000 tourist arrivals so far this year.

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that 705,024 tourists arrived in the Maldives between January 1 and August 19. This is an 81.2% increase compared to the 389,187 tourists that visited the Maldives in the same period in 2020.

The tourism ministry is also recording a daily average of 4,877 tourist arrivals in August, which is the highest recorded daily average so far this year. The highest number of tourist arrivals were recorded on August 7, which was 6,083 tourist arrivals.

The number of tourist visits have been increasing in the Maldives following the ease of restrictions due to the decrease in COVID-19 infections in the country. Around 22% of tourists that visited the Maldives this year arrived from Russia, making the country the top source of tourist visits. India makes up the second-largest source of tourist arrivals to the Maldives this year with 19% of tourist arrivals, while another 6% of tourists arrived from Germany.

The Maldives currently has 813 open tourist establishments making up a total of 50,040 beds, with 74% of beds in resorts, 18% at guesthouses, 5% at safaris, and 3% at hotels.
