Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has praised Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) for improvements made to the prison system.
In a video message on the 50th anniversary of MCS, Minister Imran thanked the senior officials and employees of the MCS for their valuable service. Minister Imran said MCS has provided numerous improvements to the Maldives prison system and has remained steadfast in rehabilitating, educating, and caring for prisoners under its care, which allows them to have a better life once released. He thanked the MCS leadership and officers for their work to improve the prison system and rehabilitate prisoners into valuable members of society and said that his wish is for all citizens to support the efforts of MCS.
MCS was formed on 31 December 2013 under the Prisons and Parole Act. The responsibilities mandated to MCS under the law are operating the Maldivian prison system, building a safe and secure prison environment for offenders, and providing training to offenders in order to teach them various skills.
MCS is also tasked with compiling procedures to serving sentences as per the court ruling and compiling procedures and arrange detention centres for offenders or remanded persons.
