Supreme Court instructs EX-VP Jameel to file his case to Civil Court

Supreme Court of the Maldives has instructed Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed to submit his case regarding his dismissal as the vice president to the Civil Court of the Maldives. The Supreme Court made the decision at a hearing held to determine whether Jameel's dismissal as the Vice President violates the constitution.

Regarding the case, Justice Azmiralda Zahir said the Supreme Court bench has concluded that the case does not meet the jurisdiction of the top court in accordance with Article 11 of the Judicature Act of the Maldives. The Civil Court has the jurisdiction on cases regarding whether a state authority or public servant has issued an order that violates the constitution, she said.

In 2015, Jameel's tenure as the vice president ended after his removal from office through a no-confidence motion with 78 votes in favour at the Parliament of the Maldives. Following his removal from office, Jameel left for the UK for medical treatment and returned to the Maldives in 2018 following President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's presidential election win.
