Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated any complaints on vehicle stickers can be submitted to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Speaking to PSM News, Inspector of Police Hussain Aslan said the Land Transport Act grants certain authorities and privileges to the traffic police, as well as individuals penalised for traffic violations. Noting the purpose of the Land Transport Act is to ensure the safety of everyone using the roads, Inspector Aslan said the traffic police is working on enforcing the Act for the safety of the public, rather than to generate revenue for the state through fines.
Speaking further, the police inspector acknowledged the parking difficulties faced in Male’ due to the large number of vehicles and limited parking spaces. He said individuals who receive a parking sticker on their vehicle can submit complaints to the transport ministry within 90 days, if they believe the sticker is not justified.
Under the amendments brought to the Land Transport Act, the fine for each parking sticker is USD 16, regardless of the number of stickers. Under the previous law, multiple stickers could raise the fine of an individual sticker to USD 48.
The Land Transport Act also states MPS can seize vehicles for traffic violations, and fine the drivers. As such, violations such as speeding and dangerous driving can result in a fine of USD 130, and the vehicle being seized for 30 days. MPS states the law allows the police to impose larger fines and destroy vehicles for multiple violations.
