President joins flag hoisting ceremony to mark Independence Day

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has participated in the flag hoisting ceremony to mark the occasion of the 56th Independence Day of the Maldives.

The ceremony was held at Republic Square at 0550hrs. Upon his arrival at the ceremony, President Solih was greeted by Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla. First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Vice President Faisal Naseem, and other senior government officials were also in attendance at the ceremony.

Independence Day celebrations are held on July 26 each year to celebrate the Maldives gaining independence on July 26, 1965, following 77 years as a British protectorate. Flag hoisting ceremonies were held in every inhabited island except for islands being monitored under COVID-19 regulations.
