Hithadhoo Port Limited (HPL) has revealed the Hithadhoo Port in Addu City has received 23,000 tonnes of goods so far this year.
Speaking to PSM News, Manager of HPL Ibrahim Rasheed said the regional port receives around 150 containers each month and that the number of goods has recently increased by twofold. Manager Rasheed said the total number of goods received so far this year is comparable to the 23,000 tonnes of goods received in the entirety of 2020. The cargo ferry arriving from Tuticorin, India, brings in goods twice a month, which has reduced prices and allowed Addu City to rely less on goods from Male' City, said Rasheed.
Further, he said businessmen in Addu City are bringing in perishable goods from India to sell at reduced prices, which has increased demand and benefited local businesses.
Additionally, a total of 88 vessels have docked at the Hithadhoo Port so far this year, bringing in perishable goods as well as resources and equipment for development projects in Addu City. HPL also cleared 800 vehicles in 2020 and cleared 400 vehicles so far this year. HPL has stated Addu City is receiving significant benefits from the amendment to the Export-Import Act, allowing a 50% duty exemption for most goods.
Currently, HPL is working to expand and improve its services as well as increase the speed at which the port clears goods.
