WAMCO requests exemption from paying GST

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has requested the Parliament of the Maldives to exempt it from paying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for its services.

In a letter sent to the Parliament Committee on Economic Affairs, WAMCO noted that utility companies are exempt from paying GST for their services. In the letter, WAMCO stated that waste management services are also essential services similar to electricity and water services, according to the Utility Regulatory Authority Act. Therefore, WAMCO requested that the parliamentary committee amend the Income Tax Act and exempt waste management services from requiring to pay GST.

Regarding the issue, the Secretariat of the Parliament has advised that such a change could only be made by amending the Goods and Services Tax Act.
