Waste from another 32 islands to be collected in Thilafushi

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has signed an agreement on the transfer of waste disposed in 32 islands to Thilafushi.

The agreement for waste disposal in 32 islands of Zone 3, under the Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Programme was signed between the government and the respective local councils on July 1. The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna, and the respective local councils of the 32 islands.

Speaking at the virtual signing ceremony, Minister Shauna said the programme will see the transfer and disposal of waste from 32 islands to Thilafushi, via large containers transported on a weekly basis. The minister said 3 vessels are being built for the operations. She added waste management facilities in each island will be upgraded based on the needs for each individual island.

Under this project, 32 islands across Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu and Vaavu Atoll will be transferring waste to Thilafushi. The project will also see new waste management facilities established in 15 islands, and the upgrade of existing facilities in 11 islands. The project also includes awareness programmes for the general public on the safe disposal of waste.
