Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has summoned Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi as part of the inquiry following the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
Mariya is the third minister to be summoned to the committee for questioning, following Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam.
The parliament committee has been summoning police and military officers individually, despite Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stating that individual officers cannot provide information on the defence force to outside parties, as it is a violation of the chain-of-command hierarchy. The committee has twice summoned Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal and Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef for questioning.
Previously, the committee has summoned the Director-General of National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Zakariyya Mansoor and Speaker Nasheed's bodyguards, who are part of the Special Protection Group (SPG) of MNDF.
Furthermore, the committee has questioned Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, Chief Superintendent of Police Moosa Ali and other senior police officers, as well as the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Ali Hashim and former Mayor of Male' City Sifa Mohamed.
The committee has stated its aim is to find the source of any security breach relating to the attack against the parliament speaker and give its recommendations to the government to prevent such an incident in the future.
