Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun dredging operation for the harbour development project in Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll.
Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to construct the Meedhoo harbour on January 21, 2020, to be completed within 408 days at a cost of USD 2.2 million. MTCC transported the necessary equipment and resources for the project to Meedhoo last April.
The project includes dredging and excavation operations, construction of a 373-metre breakwater, a 35-metre revetment, a 294-metre quay wall, and an 11-metre by 11-metre ramp. The project also includes the installation of 1,470 square metres of pavement, navigational lights, and harbour lights. Meedhoo spans 10.8 hectares and has a population of 1,400 people, most of whom rely on fishing.
MTCC is also conducting harbour development projects in Feydhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Landhoo in Noonu Atoll, and Fulhadhoo in Baa Atoll. MTCC stated the development of the Feydhoo harbour is well underway, with an overall 28% of the project completed with the harbor basin dredging currently ongoing. MTCC also said it has completed 53% of the development of the Landhoo harbour project and is currently dredging the new harbour basin.
Furthermore, the state-owned company stated the Fulhadhoo harbour project is 86% complete and the second shipment of rock boulders needed for the construction of breakwater has been delivered to the project site.
