The Maldives has discussed enhancing partnership and investment opportunities in higher education in Australia.
The discussions were held at a virtual meeting held between Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Australian High Commissioner David Holly, and senior officials of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The discussions at the meeting included providing more opportunities for Maldivian students to achieve the Australian Awards Scholarship, as well as more opportunities to achieve bachelor's degrees and full scholarships.
The officials also discussed forming a partnership with Australian universities to provide free tuition and a living allowance for Maldivian students. Further discussions were held on hosting a fair to provide information to Maldivian students on the educational opportunities in Australia, including training programmes for health workers and other sectors.
At the meeting, Minister Dr. Hassan highlighted the opportunity for Australian universities and investors to establish junior colleges and TVET centres in the Maldives under a public-private partnership agreement. He also said Maldivians have great respect for the Australian education system and noted many Maldivians who currently contribute to the country's growth had achieved their education in Australia.
High Commissioner David Holly said Australia will continue to support the Government of the Maldives and the higher education ministry to provide more opportunities for Maldivian students.
