Council to develop Farukolhufushi for local travel and events

Male' City Council has revealed Farukolhufushi will be developed for local travels and events.

Speaking at a press conference held to disseminate information regarding efforts of the Male' City Council, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said Farukolhufushi legally became part of the Greater Male' Region after the reclamation of Hulhumale' Phase II, since the island was within 700 metres of Hulhumale'.

Farukolhufushi was previously run as a tourist resort until it was connected to Hulhumale' Phase II in 2016. The island was also previously used as a drug detox centre.

The Male' City Council also has a stake in the area although Housing Development Corporation Limited (HDC) is responsible for Farukolhufushi. The council has been permitting events to be held in Farukolhufushi and is also being used as a COVID-19 isolation facility. However, the city council plans to develop the area for local trips in response to residents expressing concern over the lack of a local travel location.
