The daily average tourist arrivals to the Maldives have decreased to figures less than 2,000.
The statistics published by the Ministry of Tourist show the daily average of tourist arrivals is at 1,700 although it was at 2,000 at the end of May. The main reason for the fall is due to the prohibition for tourists arriving from South Asia and the worsening of the COVID-19 situation in the Maldives.
Tourist arrivals saw a significant increase at the beginning of the new year and the reopening of borders in July 2020. As such, 2,971 tourists arrived in the Maldives daily in January, 3,460 tourists arrived in the Maldives daily in February, 3,535 tourists arrived in the Maldives daily in March, 3,040 tourists arrived in the Maldives daily in April and 2,080 tourists arrived in the Maldives daily in May.
According to the Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdullah Mausoom, the tourist arrivals are expected to increase during July with the decrease in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.
