MPS searched 25 locations over May 6 terror attack

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed it has searched 25 locations over the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. At the press briefing held on June 6, MPS stated more than 150 individuals have provided information related to the attack.

MPS stated it has made significant progress in the investigation and expressed confidence in finding individuals involved, including those who funded the attack. Although the press briefing was held a month after the incident, MPS did not reveal any more details regarding the case.

MPS previously stated the investigation had slowed down after all the suspects and members of the investigative team tested positive for COVID-19. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the terror attack. They are 25-year-old Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, 21-year-old Mujaz Ahmed and 32-year-old Thahumeen Ahmed, and 23-year-old Ahmed Fatih. MPS stated Adhuham is the prime suspect who allegedly detonated the IED, while Thahumeen was the owner of the vehicle on which the IED was attached.

Furthermore, a special committee consisting of members of the President's Office and the Attorney General's Office is conducting an intelligence audit on the national security services over the attack. The Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services is also investigating the leak of information related to Nasheed's security details.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an IED was triggered near his residence. The ADK medical team that treated Nasheed stated he had sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack, which could have been fatal. The team of doctors stated Nasheed had to undergo hours of surgery to extract shrapnel that was lodged inside his body, which had damaged his ribs and vital organs, and that one piece of shrapnel had been one centimeter away from his heart.

He was taken to Germany on May 13 for further treatment and has since been discharged.
