Tourist arrivals decreased by 29% in May

Ministry of Tourism has revealed the number of tourist arrivals had decreased by 29% in May 2021 compared to the previous month.

The latest statistics from the tourism ministry show 64,613 tourists arrived in the Maldives in May 2021, while 91,200 tourists arrived in April. The statistics also show the number of tourist arrivals in May had declined by 37% compared to the 103,022 tourist arrivals in the same month in 2019.

The Maldives has recorded a total of 454,383 tourist arrivals so far this year, with 92,103 arrivals in January, 96,882 arrivals in February, and 109,585 arrivals in March. The statistics show the least number of tourists had visited the Maldives in May, likely due to the government temporarily halting issuing tourist visas to visitors from South Asian countries following the rise in COVID-19 cases in the region.

Currently, most visitors to the Maldives are from Russia, which makes up 23% of tourist arrivals, while the second highest number of tourists have come from India, which makes up 19.7% of tourist arrivals. The tourism ministry has recorded a daily average of 2,084 tourist arrivals, with visitors staying in the Maldives for an average of nine days.
