Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed 150 resorts were in operation across the Maldives at the end of the first quarter of 2021.
As per the quarterly economic bulletin published by MMA, the number of operational resorts in the Maldives had increased from 140 at the end of last year, to 150 at the end of the first quarter of this year. MMA revealed 155 resorts had been in operation at the end of the first quarter of 2020.
The central bank further revealed the number of operational beds had increased by 21% during the first quarter of 2021, compared to the last quarter of 2020. As such, MMA revealed 7,765 additional beds were brought into operation during the first quarter, of which 76% were from resorts.
As per the quarterly economic bulletin, occupancy rate in resorts was at 67% during the first quarter of the year. During the same period last year, occupancy rate was at 68%.
Maldives reopened its borders on July 15 last year, more than three months after borders were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the reopening of borders, number of tourist arrivals has been increasing steadily, with over 445,000 tourist arrivals recorded so far this year. Majority of resorts have resumed operations since the reopening of borders, while several international airlines have also resumed flight operations to the Maldives.
