Ministry of Tourism has revealed over 50,000 tourist arrivals have been recorded in the Maldives so far during the month of May.
As per the latest statistics of the tourism ministry, 50,525 tourists have visited the Maldives this month, as of May 22. This has taken the total number of tourist arrivals recorded in 2021 to 440,295.
As per the monthly statistics, the highest number of arrivals were recorded in March with 109,585 arrivals. Tourist arrivals dropped to 91,200 in April, and would drop further this month. The drop in tourist arrivals has been attributed to the surge of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives and the South Asian region.
Russia is currently the top source market of tourists to the Maldives, with 23% of all tourist arrivals this year recorded from Russia. India is second on the list with 20.3%.
The tourism ministry revealed an average of 2,297 tourists are currently visiting the Maldives on daily basis. Tourists are spending 9 days in the Maldives on average.
