Police urges public to refrain from undermining May 6 attack probe

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has urged the public to refrain from undermining or interfering with the investigation of the May 6 terror attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

The commissioner made the statement after individuals on social media began spreading rumors and accusing others of funding the attack as well as calling for the resignation of public officials. Expressing his concerns on Twitter, Commissioner Hameed said the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is continuing with the investigation of the May 6 terror attack with the help of international experts. The commissioner urged the public to refrain from taking any action that would undermine or interfere with the investigation and relay any information they have on the attack to MPS.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence on the night of May 6. MPS has arrested four suspects over the attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.

Furthermore, a special committee consisting of members of the President's Office and the Attorney General's Office is conducting an intelligence audit on the national security services over the attack. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also appointed a special envoy to monitor the investigation, prosecution and trial of the terrorist attack.
