City council begin cleaning and disinfecting Male' City streets

Male' City Council has started cleaning and disinfecting the streets of Male' City as part of its efforts to control the spread of COVID-19.

Newly-elected Mayor of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given the order to clean and disinfect every street of the capital. The previous city council had also made efforts to clean and disinfect the streets of Male', as well as the main roads in Hulhumale' and Villimale'.

Mayor Muizzu said the efforts to clean the streets were renewed by the new city council following a request from the Ministry of Health. The mayor said the council plans to clean and disinfect all the streets in Male', starting with the most crowded areas, and move on to the streets in Villimale' and Hulhumale'. He also said the Male' City Council has decided to establish a motorcycle parking zone in Maafannu due to requests from residents.

Mayor Muizzu is the former housing minister and a member of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). In the Local Council Elections held on April 10, Muizzu became the first PPM candidate to win the seat of Male' City Mayor. PPM also for the first time won the majority of seats in Male' City Council.
