COVID-19 cases among children increasing significantly

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed 1,600 cases from the 16,000 active COVID-19 cases in the Maldives are children.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Spokesperson of the President's Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said it is quite alarming the number of children testing positive are increasing day by day. The statistics from the HPA shows 1,663 active cases are among children aged under 10. Statistics shows 1,449 cases are among children below 18, 7,495 cases are among youth aged 18-39, 3,185 cases are among people aged 49-59 and 927 cases are among people aged 60 and above.

During the press conference, HEOC also revealed details about the positive cases in the Maldives. As such, 12,013 cases among the active cases are locals, 1,371 are Bangladeshis, 893 are Indians, 205 are Sri Lankans and 174 are Nepalis. There are about a 100 active cases among nationals of other countries.

Health professionals across the Maldives have raised concerns over the increasing number of high-risk patients and children testing positive for COVID-19.
