High Court of the Maldives has ordered to postpone the oath-taking of the president-elects of the island councils of Filladhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll and Maabaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.
The court issued the order due to a pending case at the court in relation to electoral irregularities in the two islands during the recent local council elections. The court stated the oath-taking of the president-elects of the two island councils shall be postponed until the court can issue a definitive ruling on the case or a specific instruction.
During the elections held on April 10, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s candidates Fathuhulla Hassan and Ibrahim Wisham were elected as the presidents of Filladhoo and Maabaidhoo island councils respectively. Both of them secured the seats by a single vote.
