Seven people arrested from Addu in anti-terrorism operation

Seven people have been arrested from Addu City in an anti-terrorism operation conducted by security forces.

The anti-terrorism operation in Addu was jointly conducted by Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). PSM News understands that seven people were arrested on May 15 during this operation. However, security forces have not revealed any information regarding the operation.

Security forces have strengthened its alert level in the Maldives following the terrorist attack in Male’ on May 6, which wounded Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, members of his security team and some bystanders. Since the attack, armed soldiers of MNDF have been operating in different regions across the Maldives.

MPS had earlier arrested three people directly related to the attack on Speaker Nasheed. This includes the individual who allegedly detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the speaker was getting into his car, and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.
