Criminal Court rejects charges pressed against Abdul Raheem Abdulla for using foul language

Criminal Court of the Maldives has rejected the charges pressed by the state against the President of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Abdul Raheem Abdulla for using foul language against judges.

Abdul Raheem was charged for swearing and using foul language against judges of the Criminal Court, while standing outside the court on the day former President Abdulla Yameen was sentenced to 5 years in prison for money laundering. The case was investigated by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) upon request by the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).

The Criminal Court rejected the charges pressed by the state against Abdul Raheem, stating the evidence produced during the investigation was obtained illegally. The court noted samples obtained for the audio-video report were obtained in violation of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Abdul Raheem Abdulla is one of the leading figures of the opposition coalition, consisting of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC).
