Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has sustained injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male’ City.
The explosion took place at approximately 2030hrs in Neeloafaru Magu, Male’. It is reported that the explosion took place while Speaker Nasheed was getting into his car. He was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, and the Parliament informed that he sustained injuries to his eyes and is being prepped for an emergency surgery. His driver, a security personal and a bystander also sustained injuries following the explosion.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) are currently operating in the scene and across the city. MNDF has increased its alert status within the capital to a higher level, following the incident.
An emergency session of the Parliament has been called for later on May 6, where members are expected to condone the attack and call for urgent action.
