Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has recorded a significant increase in fish purchase by the end of April compared to the same period of last year.
Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, CEO of MIFCO Ismail Fauzee said 15,000 tonnes of fish were purchased by April last year, while 22,766 tonnes were purchased in the same period of this year. He added, therefore, about USD 23 million has been paid to fishermen from the sales.
MIFCO faces difficulties if the fish caught by fishermen exceeds the fish storing capacity of the company and purchases the fish in a controlled rate. MIFCO assured fast and strategic steps have been taken to solve the difficulties. As such, Fauzee revealed development of more centres are underway which will ease difficulties faced in weighing and purchasing fish.
