Government housing projects will benefit everyone: Housing Minister

Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has stated the housing projects will be conducted by the government under a mixed development plan and will be affordable for citizens in all income categories.

Minister Aslam made the statement at the foundation laying ceremony for the One Central Park Residential Building in Hulhumale'. The One Central Park project is part of the government's efforts to solve the housing shortage by adding 120 three-bedroom apartments that are affordable for middle class citizens.

The 120 apartments are part of the 500 housing unit construction project given to India's Tata Construction 10 years ago. However, Central Mauritius bought the 120 apartments and agreed to complete the construction in 2015. The project is currently run by Central Mauritius and Rasheed Carpentry Construction (RCC) and is expected to be completed in 2023.

At the ceremony, Minister Aslam said previous governments had built housing units under the same price range, which excludes citizens who need housing the most, adding however, the housing units built under a mixed development plan will be affordable for citizens in all income categories. He said mixed development projects fall into four categories, which are council housing units, affordable housing units, middle-income housing units, and high-income housing units.
