Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has revealed the Maldives is currently experiencing the best fishing season in the last 15 years.
Speaking to PSM News, CEO of MIFCO Ismail Fauzee said fishing has been remarkably good in the southern atolls, noting most fishing vessels from all over the country are currently operating in the south. He said the number of vessels coming into Kooddoo Fisheries Complex to weigh their catch has increased significantly, rapidly filling the cold storages established in the facility. He noted MIFCO has been forced to set controls on weighing the catch from fishing vessels until April 28.
Speaking further, Fauzee said the Maldives has not experienced such a continuous boom in fishing in recent years. As such, he noted the Maldives last experienced such a fishing season 15 years ago, in 2006. He revealed most fish are being caught near Addu and Huvadhu Atoll.
Due to the large number of fish brought in for weighing at MIFCO’s facilities, the company has established a limit on the amount of fish weighed from each vessel. As such, MIFCO stated a maximum of 4 tonnes will be weighed from each vessel until April 28.
