Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has highlighted the need to extend the validity of tourist visas issued in the Maldives, in order to provide the opportunity for tourists to stay for a longer period of time.
Speaking to PSM News, Tourism Minister Mausoom noted tourists currently have to apply for a special visa extension through Maldives Immigration if they plan to stay beyond the 30-day tourist visa issued on arrival. Noting this is a difficult procedure, Minister Mausoom said efforts are underway to review the Immigration Act in order to bring the necessary amendments to introduce an extended visa for tourists who wish to stay in the Maldives longer. He said a six-month visa would be ideal for such tourists.
The tourism minister further stated tourists who plan to stay in the Maldives for a long period would be monitored to ensure they are complying with the conditions of their visa. As such, the minister said the government will ensure that such tourists are not seeking employment in the Maldives.
Meanwhile, Maldives Immigration has also stated efforts are underway to review the laws and bring in the necessary amendments in relation to visas.
