Maldives Customs Service has recorded an increase of 13% in income from import and export in March compared to the same month of last year.
The latest statistics publicised by Customs showed the Maldives imported goods worth USD 233 million in 2021, compared to the goods worth USD 207 million imported in 2020. The state generated an income of USD 17 million through import and export in March 2021, which is an increase of 13% when compared to the USD 15 million generated in the same month of 2020.
The statistics showed most of the imported goods were from Oman, India, and Singapore. In this regard, goods worth USD 30 million were imported from Oman, while goods worth USD 28 million were imported from India. Another USD 28 million worth of goods were imported from Singapore. Imports to the Maldives in March included food and beverages worth USD 52 million, and electrical appliances and machinery worth USD 41 million.
The statistics also showed a decrease of 21% in exports in March 2021. In this regard, goods worth around USD 19 million were exported, compared to the USD 25 million received from the goods exported in the same month in 2020. Most of the goods were exported to Thailand, Japan, India, the United States, and Germany.
