Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed over 2,500 people are registered to vote abroad during the upcoming Local Council Elections (LCE) and Women’s Development Committee Elections (WDCE).
Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb stated 2,501 people are registered to vote at the ballot boxes to be placed in India and Sri Lanka. As such, Habeeb said 2,059 people are registered to vote at four ballot boxes to be placed in Sri Lanka, while 442 people are registered to vote for the ballot box to be placed in India. He added 11 officials have been sent to India, while another 18 officials have been sent to Sri Lanka to oversee the voting process.
During previous elections, ECM placed ballot boxes in Malaysia and the UK as well. However, ECM was unable to obtain permission to place ballot boxes in the two countries this year due to restrictions imposed in those countries to curb the spread of COVID-19.
