Parliament of the Maldives has started reviewing the individuals who applied for the second member representing the public at the newly formed Police Board.
The parliament had initially opened applications for the two positions allocated for public representatives in the Police Board. However, upon reviewing all initial applicants, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations only endorsed former Parliamentarian Hamid Abdul Ghafoor’s name to be appointed to the Police Board. Therefore, the parliament decided to reopen applications for the second public representative position.
Upon reopening applications for the second position, seven individuals applied for the position. They are Ibrahim Thaufeeq, Mohamed Imran Shareef, Shafa Shareef, Ahmed Usaid Hassan, Aishath Rasheed and Hawwa Reena Hassan. The names of all seven individuals have been sent for committee review.
The Police Board was formed under the new Police Service Act, ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in December 2020. The Act mandates the formation of a 7-member Police Board to counsel the home minister and other relevant authorities in ensuring Maldives Police Service carries out its legal responsibilities as specified under the Police Service Act. The board is comprised of two members appointed by the President, three technical experts and two public representatives.
