Tourism Minister joins UNWTO Crisis Committee Meeting

Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom joins the Fifth Meeting of the Global Tourism Crisis Committee organised by United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The Global Tourism Crisis Committee is tasked with finding solutions to the problems faced by the tourism industry due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at the meeting, the tourism minister highlighted the efforts of the health and tourism agencies for tourism recovery in the Maldives.

The tourism minister joined the committee meeting as South Asia's chair for UNTWO. The meeting was led by Minister of Tourism of Greece Haris Theoharis.

The topics of the meeting include discussions on re-starting tourism, reversing the harm done by COVID-19, introducing vaccine certificates for travellers, and ways to support jobs and economies through tourism. At the meeting, the committee also endorsed UNWTO's Global Guidelines to Restart Tourism, an action plan focused on the Priorities for Tourism Recovery. Greece also presented a White Paper on Recommendations for Restarting Tourism, on behalf of UNWTO's European COVID-19 Task Force.

Meanwhile, Spain introduced its Guidelines for Reducing Coronavirus Infection in the Tourism Industry, which serves as a pilot project for UNWTO.
