MNDF Coast Guard begins hydrographic survey of the Maldives

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has commenced the hydrographic survey of Maldivian waters as part of the project to update navigational charts and maps.

MNDF Coast Guard is carrying out the hydrographic survey with assistance from the National Hydrographic Department of India. The survey is set to be carried out from January 31 until March 15. During the first round of the survey, territorial waters of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atoll will be surveyed.

Speaking at a press conference, MNDF Coast Guard Commandant Colonel Mohamed Saleem said the main objective of the survey is to ensure the safety of trade routes in the Maldives. Colonel Saleem said updating the charts will help to identify new lagoons and shallow areas in sea and reduce accidents. He said the charts will also assist Coast Guard’s investigation into such accidents.

Speaking at the press conference, Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Fathih assured that there will be no chance for a foreign country to access information relating to national security through the survey. He said the survey will be executed in accordance to the preset and approved plans.

The current navigational maps used in the Maldives has been in use since the 19th century. An update carried out in 2007 helped to prepare new large scale charts for Male’, Addu and Ihavandhippolhu Atoll.
